There is something romantic and mysterious about the rain. But it also gives me a feeling of freedom and fun. Like this family ritual where all the siblings take a dip together to start the day, along with their father.

Normally when I encounter someone who is afraid of

Normally when I encounter someone who is afraid of being in front of the camera I tell them, “relax, I shoot but it doesn’t hurt.”

But today as I thought about writing that phrase, I wondered: does photography hurt?

If I think of the pain of the person behind the camera, it reminds me of Sorrentino, in his las movie, where there is a dialogue between a boy who says to a man that he wants to be a movie director and the man asks him: “and what hurts you?”

Sorrentino in this beautiful conversation defends that you can’t tell stories that aren’t connected with something uncomfortable for you. “The movies are something that seems glamorous, but movies are made by people that are very uncomfortable with themselves and life.”

Talk about if photography can cause pain to the person before the camera, it makes me think of all the insecurities and fears we have, afraid that someone is going to discover them or see what we see.

Perhaps the balance is in doing the work of accepting who we are but at the same time sharing that pain with the world in whatever medium we can?
